Indium is a silver-grey, high glossy metal with a very low melting point and a high conductivity. It can be found usually in sphalerite (zinc ores) as well as in copper and tin ores.
Indium is an essential component in liquid crystal displays (LCD), computers, mobile phones, and digital cameras. It is a key element for the semiconductor industry.
The LCD sector consumes 50% of the worldwide existing indium. China produces about 500 metric tons. This corresponds to a worldwide production of 60%. The demand of indium is 900 metric tons. The difference must be compensated by recycling.
The price increased from 400 USD/kg in 2002 to 600 USD/kg in 2010.
Departing from this price level and consumption, the currently known reserves will only last for 6 years.
